Purchasing a Seaplane

Have you always dreamed of island hopping to remote destinations? Or do you live on a lake and stare in awe every time your neighbor flies away from his dock? Whatever the case, flying a seaplane can be an incredible experience, and owning one can make dreams come true!

If you are already a pilot, you will need to get your seaplane rating, if you haven’t already. I would recommend getting your seaplane rating before you go purchase your first seaplane, so that you have more knowledge about the aircraft and their systems, and you will be able to do a better test flight. The Seaplane Pilot’s Association is a great resource for finding a flight school near you.

The next step will be deciding which type of seaplane is right for you. When you are getting your training, your instructor and the staff will be a great source of information. You will need to decide whether you will only be landing in water, or if you would like the option to land on both water and land. Having the option is nice, but the maintenance costs will be more.

1976 Lake Amphib

To the left is a 1976 Lake LA 4/200 which can land both in the water and on the land. It has retractable landing gear for a hard surface landing, and a nice hull shape for landing in the water.

The photo to the left here is the same airplane parked in the water. What’s great about these aircraft is you have many more choices about where you can go. You can land in remote areas to explore wildlife or go fishing, yet still use your favorite mechanic at the local airport with ease.

When looking at seaplanes for sale, one of the biggest differences you’ll want to check on from buying a regular aircraft is water damage and corrosion. The aircraft’s history is very important in buying a seaplane. Was it flown in saltwater? If so, corrosion could be a major issue. You’ll want to make sure the owner/pilot was meticulous about taking care of any problems and doing preventative maintenance.

When you find the aircraft that you love, make sure that you get a pre-buy done from a mechanic who is experienced in the type of aircraft you plan on buying. The Seaplane Pilot’s Association forums can connect you with other seaplane pilots to get a referral for a mechanic in your area.

So remember, while buying a seaplane might require a little more work, the airplane of your dreams sitting in your backyard will be worth it!

Upgrading to a twin

Many pilots, after receiving their private pilot license in a single engine airplane, consider the “next” step. For most, the next step may be an instrument rating. But what if you wanted to buy a Piper Seneca as your personal airplane? Well, then your next step may be to get your multi-engine rating. You can, of course, then get instrument rated in the Piper Seneca.

What do you need to know about purchasing a twin engine aircraft for sale? Well, for starters, you will want to decide if you want to do your multi-engine training in your airplane or in the flight school rental. There are pros and cons to each.

The pros to getting your multi-engine rating in a flight school airplane are the following:

1. Wear and tear is not on your aircraft. Multiple take-off and landings when you’re learning (so let’s just say they aren’t your best landings), multiple engine shut downs and restarts, and heavy changes in power settings are very hard on an airplanes airframe and engine.

2. You will have your multi-engine rating when you get your airplane, which will help with the insuring your airplane.

The cons to getting your multi-engine rating in a flight school airplane are the following:

1. You may get used to a different airplane other than what you are purchasing.

2. You are going to have to at least go up with an instructor to transition you to your aircraft unless the flight school has the exact same model.

3. If you are a low time pilot, insurance may require you to do a certain amount of hours in your aircraft with an instructor anyway, in which time you may be able to get your multi-engine rating.

Multi-engine ratings usually do not take a lot of time. Most pilots that are current can get it done in the 10 hour range.

Your next steps in searching the used aircraft market for twin engine airplanes would be deciding which kind of twin suits your needs. Are you looking for more useful load than what a single engine airplane can provide, or are you planning on doing many flights over water where the second engine comes in for safety?

There are several different options out there that you should be aware of, ranging from a light twin such as a Piper Seneca, to the larger Beechcraft Baron, up to a larger workhorse such as the Piper Navajo Chieftan. Once you have decided your needs and your budget, you may want to give the insurance company a call and make sure you can get insured in the airplane you are looking at. A new pilot with low multi time is going to have a hard time getting insured in a Piper Navajo. So talk to the insurer and see what kind of time they are looking for and what schooling options may be available to help.

After you have decided on what type of aircraft you want, you can search the aircraft for sale market for the best deal out there. Keep in mind that prices that look too good to be true usually are, and the assistance of an experienced broker can help you in more ways that you can imagine.

Airplanes and Small Children

I have posted before about not buying a small single engine airplane when you plan on toting a family around. I have mentioned that a four place aircraft doesn’t hold four adults (usually) and enough fuel to get you far- or even off the runway. A four place aircraft could take two adults and one or two small children, however- or so I thought.

Well, here is my issue. I have been trying to plan a quick trip from Tampa to the Florida Keys in my family’s Piper Archer. The trip takes just under 2 hours, as compared to a seven hour drive. It’s a quick and easy flight, and since I am from the Keys, I like to go spend time down there, especially since my parents still have their house down there (i.e., free place to crash!). Well, now I have a son who is a year old. You would think that two adults and one very small child would be fine in a Piper Archer. Then you start to think about all the stuff you have to tug along for kids. He needs a portable crib, some entertaining toys, a suitcase for all of his stuff. Well, now the Archer is looking a little small! So what to do?

My first thought would be a used Cessna 210. I used to fly them for a freight company and have seen first-hand the amount of stuff those beasts can haul. They are still single-engine which I prefer for maintenance (cost) reasons. They definitely aren’t the prettiest airplanes around, which I feel like the Archer is a good looking airplane. The Archer has also been in my family for over 20 years, in fact, 24 years ago, I took my first flight in that airplane, to the keys, when I was only 4 weeks old.

Any other parents out there who are pilots that tote around kids? Do you just take less stuff and figure it out, or do you have an airplane that can actually carry all your stuff? Would love to hear your thoughts!

How to choose an Aircraft For Sale Website to List your Aircraft On

When you decide to list your aircraft for sale, how do you know where the best place to market it is? 20 years ago, you would call up the print publication magazine and tell them what you want to say in your ad, and for a pretty penny more, you could add a small photo of your airplane. Buyers would have to use their imagination to figure out what your airplane looks like and the features it may have. Most print publications only  allow a few small lines of text that contain short abbreviations. This leaves many buyers confused as to what all these abbreviations may mean.

Luckily, those days are now behind us and we have the Internet. For around the same price as those old print ads, you can list your aircraft online with much more detail. On most sites, you can list multiple photos so that you can show potential buyers what the interior of your aircraft looks like, including pictures of the panel. You can take close up pictures of anything special you want buyers to see. When listing your aircraft for sale online, the text that you can write is almost limitless. You can list all the avionics, equipment, special features, when the last maintenance was done and when the next is due, pretty much anything you can think. On some websites, you can also add documents such as copies of your aircraft’s logbook. Some websites even offer video uploads. So if you want to video a walk around of your aircraft or showoff your airplane taking off, you can now do that.

So how do you decide which websites you should list your aircraft on? When considering websites, you want to make sure that they get plenty of traffic (buyers) and that they have features that are easy to use. Go to the site with the mind frame of a buyer, and make sure the site is easy to use and functions well. Check out the features they offer for both buyers and sellers, and of course, look at price. Pricing should be the last factor behind all of the previous things mentioned. After all, if a site doesn’t get much traffic, it doesn’t matter how good of a deal the price seemed.

So how do you find out which websites are the most popular? It’s actually easier than you may think. Go to a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc) and type in some broad search terms that aircraft buyers would use. Terms such as “Used Aircraft,” “Aircraft For Sale,” “Used Airplanes” are a few of the most popular. The top three websites for those search terms are probably going to be your best bet. Check out those websites and see what they have to offer. Finally, look at their domain name and make sure it’s something users can easily remember, so that they are sure to come back again.

Good Luck!

Considering Selling Your Aircraft Online? Tips To Know.

So you have decided to put your aircraft for sale. If you are planning on doing this alone, without a broker, here are some tips you should know.

1. Get all your aircraft documents in order and organized. This way, you can use them to put as much information into your aircraft listing as possible. Also, many websites will allow you to include copies of your documents with your aircraft for sale listing. This is a great feature that allows users (buyers) to spend more time looking at your aircraft, leading them to more interest.

2. Make sure all inspections and ADs are up to date. If there are any minor repairs that can be made, you should consider getting them done now so that your aircraft is in great condition. If a buyer sees a lot of little issues, they may assume that there are larger issues or give you a low-ball offer. You want the buyer to see that you take excellent care of your aircraft.

3. Get your airplane detailed. A nice wax job can do wonders for making a dull paint job look better. Make sure the headliner and floor carpet are free of stains and that the seats are in good condition.

4. On a nice day, choose a good background and put your aircraft in front of it. Take a lot of pictures with multiple angles. Get creative! You’ll want to take around 20 photos so that you can take the top ones for your online aircraft listing. Make sure you take pictures of any cosmetic issues that you won’t be taking care of. Being up front about any of these things will show buyers that you are an honest seller.

5. Choose which sites you plan on listing your aircraft for sale on. To do this, go to a search engine (like Google, Yahoo, or Bing) and type in some broad terms people would use to search for aircraft. Terms like “Aircraft For Sale,” “Used Aircraft,” and “Used Airplanes” are a few of the most popular. Check out the top sites that come up on your search engine. These will most likely be the biggest classified ad sites for aircraft and will generate the most traffic.  Go to each of these sites and see what features they offer. Does it seem user friendly and easy to navigate? Make sure that if you were a buyer, that you would like the site.

6. Once you register as a seller on one or more of these sites, you can go ahead and list your airplane. List as much detail as possible, your best pictures, and upload your documents. Make sure to include your contact information and be ready to take the calls!

Best of Luck!
